Relay For Life

8 05 2008

Cancer, it claims the lives of thousands. Just last week a local Relay For Life event was held in Shreveport and Bossier. KTBS broadcast two live special programs bringing you personal stories by those affected and also provided you with information on early detection. If you ask around I believe it would be very difficult to find someone whose life has not been touched by cancer. This week a member of the KTBS family lost their mother to cancer. Our prayers and thoughts are with them. My father is recovering from prostate cancer right now. My mother, she has had several types of skin cancer. I’m sure everyone remembers little Ethan Powell who lost his battle just a few months ago. What I’m saying is that everyone should help fight this. Early detection is the key. If you are at risk, please visit your doctor for a screening. Get a blood test to check your white blood cell count or your PSA levels. Get your mammogram or colonoscopy. Let your dermatologist take a look at that irregular mole. Just do everything you can to protect yourself. You can also visit the Relay For Life website for more information. On a lighter note though, below are some photos of the event. If you would like a copy of any these photos just let me know. Also if you check out the videos in the side bar below you will find some clips of the event shot by Sherri Talley.

Buddy Flett, Rockin’ Again

26 04 2008

Buddy FlettAs a photographer for any news station we get see and hear many things during our career. Sometimes the things we witness would make mothers cry and even the strongest of men hearts ache. Now every time and again we do report good news. I know some would disagree with me but today I had the privilege of filming a jam session with local legend Buddy Flett, a member of the Bluebirds, and blues great, Hubert Sumlin.

Buddy was diagnosed with an extremely devastating form of brain inflammation that changed his life and music forever. Currently he is touring on the road to recovery relearning how to do what he was known for, making music. The road he is on is not easy. Before he could even think about picking up his guitar Buddy had to learn how to talk.Hubert Sumlin

Today Buddy jammed with Hubert Sumlin inside our KTBS3 studios proving he still has it. Check out the video below and see what I mean. Also, this Sunday, April 27th at the Strand Theater, “A Benefit for Buddy” will be held featuring Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Hubert Sumlin. Tickets are $27 to $37; $102, VIP ticket, includes a meet and greet with artists. For tickets, visit the Strand Theatre box office, call 226-8555 or go online to www.thestrandtheatre.com. For more info on Buddy or Hubert just click on their pictures to go to their websites. Also be sure to watch KTBS3 News at 10 Monday night when Sherri Talley profiles Buddy in the ArkLaTex Miracle Workers series.

Aiptek GO-HD

20 04 2008

Aiptek GO-HDThese days, people are not satisfied with what they see on their TV screens unless they can see the fine print on that football as it’s being tossed, or count how many blemishes an actor has on their face. Aiptek has stepped up to the plate, and is offering a new HD camcorder that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

The Aiptek GO-HD is an HD camcorder priced at $199. It’s features include a 5MP CMOS sensor, 3X optical zoom with auto focus, still capture (up to 2560×1920), and a 270 degree Swivel-Reversible 2.4″ TFT Color LCD Display. The GO-HD is one of the smallest HD camcorders around, measuring 4.5″ x 2.75″ x 1.25″ and weighing in at only 7.5 ounces.

Other features include one touch recording, AIPTEK’s Night Shot feature, which enhances image quality in dark or low light settings (up to 4 feet) by utilizing built-in LED lights, and an included remote control. The GO-HD is equipped with a built-in charger as well, so it can be recharged via USB when attached to a PC or by attaching the AC charger cable and plugging it into a wall outlet.

This cam does have a couple of drawbacks though. For starters, it doesn’t have any internal memory, so unless you have an SD card lying around, this thing is just a pretty paperweight. Aiptek GO-HDIt also doesn’t have a lens cover (come on Aiptek, you couldn’t throw in an extra piece of plastic to protect that fancy lens?) which means micro-scratches can become an issue if you aren’t careful when handling this camcorder. There doesn’t seem to be any form of image stabilization either, so people with shaky hands might run into difficulty.

Honestly though, for $199, you are getting a great bang for your buck. This camcorder fits perfectly in the entry-level category, and would make a great present for someone who loves to capture life’s precious moments… in excruciatingly great detail.

An image on your blog is probably the most desirable asset to a blogger. But how do you get an image? Once you figure how to post the image then the lust for custom images will overcome you. So now the mission is how to create a unique captivating piece of art. No blog is complete without it. There is so many possibilities about what can be done. You could really have an entire page of pics. A creative chaotic simplicity, streamlined navigation, these are just a few things to strive for.

Posting Video

As of right now the KTBS blog empire has NO independent embeddable video player. This atrocity is forcing reporters to use You Tube. Some nights I go to bed and dream about the day when KTBS will have its own video player that will be functional with the blog. Technology! Man o’ man this is gonna get hairy. As for now some live to fight another day. I try to live to laugh another day. Enjoy…
